When Maciej learns that his wife Janina has died in a car accident, his world collapses. How can he break the news to his two young daughters that they have just lost their mother? What should he say to his in-laws? And how does one go on living when a once peaceful life suddenly darkens and turns into a nightmare?

And why did the accident happen near Mrągowo, when his wife had assured him she was travelling on business to Kraków? When a mysterious man appears at the funeral, Maciej begins to realise that Janina was hiding many secrets, and quickly understands that he never truly knew the woman with whom he spent twelve years of his life.

About the author: Wojciech Chmielarz is a journalist specialising in organised crime, terrorism and international security. A highly regarded author of crime fiction, he has twice won the Wielki Kalibru Award (2015 and the Readers’ Award in 2019), for which he has been nominated nine times. His psychological thriller Żmijowisko (2018) earned him the Złoty Pocisk Award and the Grand Prix at the Warsaw Crime Fiction Festival. Three of his novels have been adapted for the screen. He lives in Warsaw with his family.
